Legend has it that Buddhist monks discovered goji berries hundreds of years ago while wandering in the mountains of Tibet. The monks who began to regularly incorporate goji berries into their diet are said to have lived longer than those who did not consume them. The oil obtained from the seeds of these berries is light and fast-absorbing, and is rich in essential fatty acids – particularly omega-6 linoleic acid – as well as vitamin E and beta-carotene, which acts as a precursor to vitamin A. Sustainability
In mountainous Nepal, for example in the village of Samagaun on the slopes of the Himalayas, the cultivation of goji berries is linked to local climate change resilience and women's economic empowerment. A UNDP-supported project has established greenhouses and solar dryers for growing and processing goji berries. A women-led farmer community participates in collecting, drying, and selling the berries all the way to Kathmandu, providing livelihoods for up to 174 households. The adoption of drip irrigation (drip irrigation + fertilization) in Nepal has reduced water consumption by up to 70% compared to traditional methods. This method is particularly well-suited for the delicate mountain climate, where the efficient use of water and fertilizers is key to sustainability and soil conservation.
